Practice That Actually Transfers to the Course
Almost everyone has had the experience of striking it beautifully on the range and then failing to reproduce any of it on the first tee — which is not a nerves problem so much as a practice design problem. Here is why range practice does not transfer, what to change, and how to structure a session.

Why Range Practice Does Not Transfer
Nothing about it resembles golf: the the-you-hit-the-same-club-repeatedly (the block repetition bearing no resemblance to a round from the fitness-better-swing logic — the block-repetition), the the-there-is-no-consequence (the no penalty for a bad shot removing the pressure from the mental-game logic — the no-consequence), the the-the-lie-is-always-perfect (the flat mats hiding what real lies demand from the fitness-better-swing logic — the perfect-lie), the the-there-is-no-target-discipline (the vague aiming allowing sloppy alignment from the fitness-better-swing logic — the no-target-discipline), the the-you-never-change-clubs (the never switching clubs as you would on course from the fitness-better-swing logic — the never-switch-clubs), and the reframe (the range-to-course gap as a practice design problem — because nothing about hitting fifty seven-irons off a flat mat resembles playing golf).

What to Change
Making practice resemble golf: the the-random-not-block-practice (the changing club and target every shot from the fitness-better-swing logic — the random-practice), the the-a-specific-target-every-shot (the picking a precise target and alignment each time from the fitness-better-swing logic — the specific-target), the the-a-full-pre-shot-routine-every-time (the running your complete routine on every ball from the mental-game logic — the full-routine), the the-play-an-imaginary-hole (the simulating holes with driver, approach and wedge from the mental-game logic — the imaginary-holes), the the-add-consequence (the setting scoring or forfeits to create pressure from the mental-game logic — the add-consequence), the the-practise-the-uncomfortable-shots (the practising the shots you avoid from the fitness-better-swing logic — the uncomfortable-shots), the the-short-game-gets-the-most-time (the the short game deserving most practice time from the short-game-adjacent logic — the short-game-most), and the the-fewer-balls-more-attention (the fewer balls hit with full attention from the fitness-better-swing logic — the fewer-balls-more-attention).
The Session Notes
Structuring it: the the-warm-up-the-body-first (the a mobility warm-up before hitting from the mobility-warm-up logic — the warm-up-first), the the-start-with-short-clubs (the beginning with wedges and working up from the fitness-better-swing logic — the start-short), the the-a-technical-block-then-a-random-block (the technical work first, then randomised play practice from the fitness-better-swing logic — the technical-then-random), the the-one-swing-thought-only (the a single swing thought per session from the mental-game logic — the one-swing-thought), the the-finish-with-simulated-play (the finishing with imaginary holes under pressure from the mental-game logic — the finish-with-play), the the-stop-before-fatigue-degrades-it (the ending before tiredness embeds poor patterns from the injury-prevention logic — the stop-before-fatigue), the the-core-and-rotation-work-off-course (the rotation and core training supporting the swing from the core-rotation logic — the core-off-course), and the frame (the transferable practice as random rather than block — a specific target and full routine on every shot, imaginary holes, consequence and fewer balls with more attention. Change club and target every shot, run your full pre-shot routine, play imaginary holes with consequences, and hit fewer balls with more attention).
Almost everyone has had the experience of striking it beautifully on the range and then failing to reproduce any of it on the first tee — which is a practice design problem more than a nerves problem. Range practice does not transfer because you hit the same club repeatedly, there is no consequence, the lie is always perfect, there is no target discipline, and you never change clubs. Change it with random not block practice, a specific target every shot, a full pre-shot routine every time, playing an imaginary hole, adding consequence, practising the uncomfortable shots, giving the short game the most time, and hitting fewer balls with more attention. Structure the session with a mobility warm-up, starting short, a technical block then a random block, one swing thought, finishing with simulated play, and stopping before fatigue.
